  Understanding your Prescription

Your prescription contains various information to ensure that you get the best spectacles.

  Your Sphere measurement

The sphere specifies the strength of the lens. If you are buying Ready Readers, only this value is required. A plus sphere is to correct long sightedness (difficulty to focus on close objects) and a minus sphere is correct short sightedness (difficulty to focus on distant objects)
  Cylinder and Axis explained

The Cylinder and the Axis compensate for the shape of the eye. When the shape of the eye has become more like a rugby ball rather than a football. This means the eye has difficulty focusing at certain angles.
  The Add

The add is short for Reading Addition and is the additional correction required for your reading prescription, this must be used to make reading glasses.

  Pupillary Distance PD

The PD is the distance from the centre of the pupil ( black spot) in one eye to the center of the pupil in the other eye. This measurement improves the positioning of your lenses within the frame you have chosen. It can be provided in minutes by your optician or doctor, and so we recommend that you ask for it when you have yor eyes tested. Alternatively, you may also chose to use an average PD, which is provided for you by our dispensing opticians on the order form.
If you have a sphere or a cyl value greater than 2.0 we recommend including your PD in the prescription form. If it isn't on the copy of your prescription you recieved don't worry, measuring your PD is a simple procedure - all you need is a friend and a ruler.

This shows a PD of 65mm
  Lens Types

These are the type of lenses available from SpecsCheap.co.uk
  • Standard plastic lenses included in the frame price
  • Hardcoated Lenses Add £5.00 Tougher lenses that are scratch resistant.
  • Multi Anti Reflection
Add £15.00 This includes a hardcoat with a coating to improve vision and reduce glare and is cosmetically better looking
  • Transition Lenses
Add £40.00 These lenses change colour going darker in sunlight and give automatic protcetion against damaging UV rays and glare, which can be damaging even when the sun is not out. They filter 100% of harmful UVA and UVB radiation, helping to protect your eyes from the long term effects of sunlight.
  • Thin & Lite 1.6 Index

  • Super Thin 1.67 Index
Add £40.00 Includes both hardcoat and Multi Anti Reflection coatings while reducing the thickness of the lens itself even more than the 1.6 index so even more cosmetically better looking by reducing the edge thickness even more (Strongly recommended for short sighted prescriptions with high minus lenses).
  • Bifocal Lenses
Bifocal lenses can be ordered at an extra charge of only £35, and are for customers who require 2 strengths of lenses for both distance and reading prescription and only wish to have one set of glasses.
As standard we will use D28 bifocal lenses. These are 28mm wide and are the most commonly used by opticians they will be positioned vertically 3mm below the centre of the lens and horizontally are centered on your pupillary distance.
If you would like to position the reading area Higher or Lower than the standard 3mm below the centre of the lens then put this in the comment section.
Just go through the normal order process, and choose 'bifocal' where you are asked to select lens use.
  • Tint
Add £7.50 To our standard or hardcoated lenses only and only a sunglass tint with build in UV protection available.
 Frame Dimensions

Where to find the frame dimensions

All frames will have their dimensions printed on them, finding them can be difficult. The most common location is on the inside of the bridge or arms, but they can also be found on the ear pieces or even under the bridge on the nose rest.
What the dimension tells you

The dimension is in millimeters, and usual comes in two parts, the first part will indicate the width of the eye piece and the bridge (48 x 20) and the second will indicate the length of the side (140) in the picture above.
